Pepsi for Vodka?

Sounds like a good deal to me!

Back in 1959 Pepsi was gaining popularity in North America but wanted to branch out worldwide. One area of the world that was untouched for the most part was Russia. At a trade show  Nikita Khrushchev (the then Soviet premier) tried Pepsi. The media went crazy with pictures! With the cold war warming up (so to speak!) this was a great picture of hope for these parts of the world.

Years later on November 16, 1972 PepsiCo approached the government of Soviet Union and proposed a barter arrangement that gave them exclusive export and Western marketing rights to Stolichnaya vodka in exchange for importing and Soviet marketing of Pepsi-Cola. This historical exchange led to Pepsi-Cola being the first foreign product legally approved to be sold in the USSR. Two years later the first Pepsi bottling factory was opened, and only a few years after that there were more than 20 factories! PepsiCo was the official sponsor of the Goodwill Games in Moscow and the first company to have advertisements on USSR television.

By 1990, the barter trade reached a value of $3 billion with Pepsi trading its product not only for vodka but also for ocean freighters and tankers. By this point, Pepsi Co was not just selling pop but had expanding in the fast food business with the Pizza Hut franchise.
